Roger Goodell: Two personal fouls should result in an automatic ejection

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wants a new NFL rule that ejects players after two personal fouls. (USATSI)
In Super Bowl 50 on Sunday, odds are at least one player will be flagged for a personal foul. Even if that same player committs another personal foul, he probably won't fear getting ejected from the biggest game of the season. A year from now, that line of thinking might not hold true anymore -- if NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's most-recent proposal turns into a new league rule.
At Goodell's State of the Union address on Friday, he suggested a new rule -- one that he already recommended to the league's competition committee. Goodell wants two personal fouls to equal an automatic ejection, citing player safety and "standards of sportsmanship."
"I believe that the league should pursues a policy where if there are two personal fouls in a game, there's an automatic ejection of the player," Goodell said. "I believe that's consistent with what we believe are the safety issues, but I also believe it's consistent with what we believe are the standards of sportsmanship that we've emphasized. We should take that out of the hands of the officials when it gets to that point. They'll obviously have to throw the flag, but when they do, we'll look to see if we can reach an agreement on the conditions of which they'd be ejected."
But as Goodell noted, rule changes aren't simply determined by him.
"But that's a competition committee matter," Goodell continued. "We'll discuss it further with the player's association in February at the combine, as well as the membership in March. But I've recommended already to the competition committee to at least consider."
It's worth noting that Goodell's rule would've prevented the ugly events that transpired earlier this season between the Giants and Panthers, particularly wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. who was flagged for three personal fouls. Even after blatantly launching himself at Josh Norman's head, Beckham remained in the game, though he was eventually suspended for one week by the league.
With that being said, Goodell's rule will still most likely become a hotly debated topic this offseason. Last year, the NFL made headlines when they changed up the extra-point rules. Will personal fouls be next?
